about

This song is partly inspired by and uses quotes from the poem "The Love Song Of J. Alfred Prufrock" by T.S. Eliot.

Also, "Louie Louie" is by the Kingsmen, and must be played at every wedding reception by law.

lyrics

They blast "Louie Louie," and all the wedding hits
While us timid like the feeble just gape around and sit
Her eyes a vivid recollection of chances gone by
And I just nurse my drink as if that'll catch her eye

We talk about the politics,
We talk about the style,
We talk about the beautiful bride,
Gone gliding down the aisle.
And through it all I've caught her eye,
And she has caught my smile.

Still we don't dance
To those same songs
I didn't dance to back when I didn't dance.

And I don't know why...
There's so much of me a good cologne can't hide

"In the room women come and go
Talking of Michelangelo"
"In the room women come and go
Talking of Michelangelo"
And, "do I dare?"
And, "do I dare?"

And I don't know why...
There's so much of me a good red wine can't hide

A handshake and some "nice to meet"s
Our eyes shared a long, longing embrace
But the writing parts inside of my brain
Had left a gaping empty page

And so no line had come to mind
To coo through her soft hair
And blank of verbs and blank of thoughts
I just got out of there
Back to a safer distance
Retreating from her stare

So we can't dance
To those same songs
I didn't dance to back when I didn't dance.
And we won't dance
To those same songs
I didn't dance to back when I didn't dance.

And I don't know why...
There's so much of me my finest suit can't hide

"In the room women come and go
Talking of Michelangelo"
"In the room women come and go
Talking of Michelangelo"
And, "do I dare?"
And, "do I dare?"

I should say:
"Let us go then you and I,
Evening spread out against the sky"
"By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed brown
Till human voices wake us and we drown."

"In the room women come and go
Talking of Michelangelo"
"In the room women come and go
Talking of Michelangelo"
And, "do I dare?"
Oh, "do I dare?"

Oh, and "do I dare?"
